Casares is a beautiful picture postcard village with a breathtaking approach that inspires the first time visitor to slow down to absorb the stunning vista. Only 9 miles from the coast, Casares is a gorgeous retreat with a riot of hilly streets to explore.
On approaching the village for the first time, take the coast road (N340/A7) and turn inland at KM147 (between Estepona and Sabinillas) near Torre de la Sal and keep going for 15km. The scenery is picturesque, so take your time.
Suddenly you take a bend in the road, and are treated to a spectacular view of the village with its medieval fortress.
Bird watchers especially will appreciate the opportunity to view a colony of tawny vultures, which live close to the village, as they soar majestically across the sky with almost two metre wingspans, making an impressive sight for anyone.
In the highest part of Casares there are three outstanding architectural elements to explore, namely the ruins of its Arabic fort, the cemetery, and the parish church of La Encarnación, from the 16th century.
Visitors may also like to browse the village shops selling local handicraft including esparto grass objects, weaving, lacework, jewellery, ceramics, and glass.
