One of Andalucia’s loveliest towns, Ronda is steeped in history.
Standing on a towering plateau in the mountains of Malaga Province, it is famous throughout Spain for the plunging river gorge that divides the medieval from the 18th century parts of the town.
Known as El Tajo (The Cliff), the gorge is spanned by a stone bridge, which once housed a prison.
It is thrilling to stand on the bridge and stare down at the waters of the River Guadalevin. Ronda is also famous for its bullring, which is the oldest and arguably most historic in Spain – the arena itself is also the country’s largest.
When there are no fights, the bullring is open to visitors, and has a fascinating museum with many momentos of Spain’s most renowned bullfighters.
Ronda is a popular destination for visitors to the Costa del Sol, as it has a traditional charm that attracts the day tripper.
